Joseph Schmidt, MD
Joe has an emergency medicine career spanning over 30 years. He trained as an EMT during his undergraduate education, went on to medical school at Boston University, and to residency in Emergency Medicine at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. During his active-duty career in the Air Force, he served as the EMS Medical Director for the Kelly/Lackland AFB complex. Trained as a flight surgeon, he participated in critical care transport as a team member of the MAST (Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic - Army rotary wing), CCATT (Critical Care Air Transport Team – Air Force fixed wing), and MFST (Mobile Forward Surgical Team). Joe has worn multiple hats since arriving at Baystate in 2000, including Program Director of the Emergency Medicine residency and Vice Chair and Chief of the Baystate Emergency Department. Joe is happy to have had the opportunity over the last 3 years to re-engage in critical care transport medicine as the Associate Medical Director for the Baystate Health/AMR Critical Care Transport Team, a fully licensed, Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS)-accredited ground critical care transport service.
